Behind the Lines: Portraying the Faces and Stories of the Second World War

Every year, as I watch the Remembrance Day ceremonies, I look at the faces around me, and think about the interesting experiences and the stories behind those faces. I wanted to create portraits of war veterans as a way of learning more about their personal experiences of war, and as a way of honouring them for their contributions. This project, which was completed in 2008, was meant capture the spirit of the men and women who served Canada during the Second World War.

The series of portraits was exhibited at the Cumberland Gallery in November 2008, with the kind support of the City of Ottawa and the Ontario Arts Council.
